A version of this question comes up at the start of almost every interview. What does an interviewer want to hear when he asks this question? He’s probably not interested in your toy car collection, or the fact that you was a spelling bee champ in grade school. He wants to know what brought you here, to this interview, and in the medical profession.

Interviewers unanimously say that the first two minutes are very important, so do a lot of preparation in order to make that vitally good first impression.

The first thing you need to do is write down an answer that highlights why you decided to go into the medical field, your educational experiences (if you have just graduated – if not, your job experiences) and your personality attributes that make you a good fit for this job. A good estimate is 120-160 words per minute. Then practice this spiel and make sure you keep it concise and logical, and also natural – you don’t want to sound like you are only reciting it. Don’t worry if you repeat a lot of the things on your resume; it is likely that your interviewer has only spent two minutes reading it before the interview, and will appreciate a refresh.

The most difficult part of sitting in the hot seat during an interview is knowing when to strike a balance. When asked to describe a previous job experience, do you go into detail, and if so, how much detail?

Hiring managers say that rambling too much will hurt your chances of getting a job. Instead, focus on talking about skills that you picked up in school or pervious job experiences, or qualities you inherently possess, that you can use in the job you are being interviewed for. Also, show your personality and your enthusiasm for the job and the company (this is where all the pre-interview research you did about the hospital will come in handy) but at the same time, don’t be too energetic or animated because that will come across as fake, which is a turn-off as well.

From communication, team playing, leadership, management, ethical/difficult work scenarios, all of these aspects are being covered in an interview. For a mock up interview that usually last 20-30 minutes, interviewers are assessing your technique and weaknesses. Complete feedback regarding ones performance is given. In an interview, one should develop a technique. Techniques will definitely bring out strong answers to queries and at the same time you’ll be able to give justice on your skills, abilities, and personality. Be careful too with your body language since I send signals or signs during the interview.

If you are asked an inappropriate or illegal question, you have to make a choice about how to respond. In many cases, the best thing to do when you encounter an inappropriate question is to direct the conversation towards a discussion of your abilities as they relate to the position.

For example, if you are asked, “who will take care of your children when you need to take a late shift?” You can sidestep the question and say, “the job ad stated that this job required working late shifts 25% of the time, and I am fully available to do this”.
